How to calculate weeks left in the year

Count the remaining days, then split them into seven-day periods.

Start with the calendar days from today through December 31, including both dates. Divide by 7: the whole-number part gives your full weeks, and the remainder gives your extra days. With “Include today” unchecked, subtract one day before dividing.

Example: October 19 through December 31, including both dates

74 days = 10 full weeks + 4 extra days

74 ÷ 7 is approximately 10.6 weeks. Excluding October 19 leaves 73 days: 10 full weeks and 3 extra days.

A full week here means any seven consecutive days; it does not have to start on Monday or Sunday. This is a duration, not a calendar week number. The calculator compares calendar dates, so daylight saving time changes do not add or remove a day.

Year-start and year-end examples: counting through December 31
Reference dateInclude that dayExclude that day
January 1, regular year52 weeks + 1 day52 weeks
January 1, leap year52 weeks + 2 days52 weeks + 1 day
December 31, any year0 weeks + 1 day0 days

Each example ends on December 31 of the reference year. January 1 of the next year is excluded.

Turn the weeks left this year into a weekly plan

Use the full weeks as planning slots, then decide what to do with the extra days. For example, with 10 full weeks left and 20 study topics to review, aim for 2 topics a week and keep the extra days for catching up.

  1. 1. Set a year-end target

List what you want to finish by December 31: chapters to read, lessons to complete or tasks to close out.

  2. 2. Check your available time

Allow for travel, holidays and time off. The calendar count includes those days; your plan may need fewer weeks.

  3. 3. Divide the work by the weeks

Divide your remaining tasks by the weeks you can use. If no full weeks remain, plan in days instead.

Working toward a different deadline? Use the countdown calculator for a specific future date. Planning the rest of a school year or semester? Check your school calendar too: a date countdown includes breaks, so it does not tell you how many teaching weeks remain.

Weeks left in the year: common questions

Counting today, comparing results and estimating working time.

Does the weeks-left count include today?

Yes. With “Include today” checked, the count runs from today through December 31. Uncheck it to start from tomorrow. January 1 of next year is always excluded. On December 31, the result is 0 full weeks and 1 extra day with today included, or 0 days with it excluded.

Why does my week count differ from another site?

Check the reference date, whether today is included, and how the result is rounded. For example, 74 days can appear as 10 full weeks, 10 weeks and 4 days, or about 10.6 weeks. This tool shows all three forms. A different time zone may also mean a different “today.” Calendar week numbers are a separate measure, so 52 minus the current week number will not reliably give the remaining seven-day periods.

How many work weeks are left in the year?

The result above counts calendar days, including weekends and holidays. To find working weeks, count the remaining days you are scheduled to work, subtract holidays and planned leave, then divide by your usual workdays per week. For a five-day schedule, 45 available workdays equal 9 working weeks. That is an equivalent amount of working time, rather than a count of complete Monday-to-Friday blocks. US federal holidays, UK bank holidays and individual work schedules can give different totals.

Can I check weeks remaining from a custom date?

This calculator starts from your current local date and ends on December 31 of the same year. It does not have a custom start date, target date or year selector. For a birthday, exam, graduation or project deadline, the countdown calculator lets you choose a future date and time and shows a live countdown to that event.

Does a leap year affect the weeks-left count?

Yes, if February 29 is still ahead or is today with “Include today” checked. A leap year has 366 days: 52 full weeks and 2 days. A regular year has 365 days: 52 full weeks and 1 day. The calculator uses the actual dates, so it includes the leap day when it falls within the remaining period. Once February 29 has passed, it adds no extra day to the time left.

What does the year progress percentage mean?

It shows completed calendar days through yesterday as a percentage of the whole year. The calculation is completed days divided by 365, or 366 in a leap year, multiplied by 100. January 1 starts at 0%. Each square in the year view represents one day. Changing “Include today” changes the time remaining, but leaves the progress percentage unchanged.
